Research Interests: 

Professor McKanan's research focuses on religious movements for social transformation in the United States from the abolitionist era to the present, with a particular emphasis on the contributions liberal and esoteric religious traditions make to sociopolitical radicalism. His newest book, Eco-Alchemy: Rudolf Steiner’s Anthroposophy and the Environmental Movement, will be published by the University of California Press in 2017. He also teaches and writes on Unitarian Universalist history, theology, and ethics.
