Environments, Genes, Archaeology and the End of Prehistory: Discussion of Broodbank’s Making of the Middle Sea
Cyprian Broodbank, Disney Professor of Archaeology, Cambridge University, has published a path-breaking new synthesis that captures the rich evolutionary arc of Mediterranean civilization from 500,000 BP to 500 BC. Climate change emerges as a constant catalyst for new departures as archaeology, linguistics, genetics and the earliest written records dissolve forever the barrier that formerly separated “prehistory” from “history.” Join Prof. Broodbank and noted Brown and Harvard specialists of archaeology, genetics, anthropology and history for a fascinating discussion of the emerging new vision of the origins of the ancient world, and its modern successors.
Cyprian Broodbank, Susan Alcock (Joukowsky Institute, Brown University), Emma Dench (Classics and History, Harvard), Michael Herzfeld (Anthropology, Harvard), Nick Patterson (SoHP; Broad Institute at MIT and Harvard), Daniel Lord Smail (SoHP; History, Harvard), Jason Ur (Anthropology, CGA, Harvard)
Hosted by Michael McCormick (SoHP, History, Harvard)
Cosponsored by the Initiative for the Science of the Human Past at Harvard and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Harvard University.
