The Great Work
American Teilhard Association Annual Meeting
General Theological Seminary
New York, NY
April 15, 2000

The Great Work: Our Way Into the Future
The “Great Work” now, as we move into a new millennium, is to carry out the transition from a period of human devastation of the Earth to a period when humans will be present to the planet in a mutually beneficial manner. Such a transition has no parallel since the geobiological transition that took place 67 million years ago when the period of the dinosaurs was terminated and a new biological age begun. Now we awaken to a period of extensive disarray in the biological structure and functioning of the planet.

Seldom have such demands been made on human will as are being made at the present time. A concern for will does appear in the work of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, particularly in Human Energy. He saw quite clearly that we must consciously will the further stages of the evolutionary process.

The American Teilhard Association is pleased to have Thomas Berry as their featured speaker at this event. In the past, Berry has served as President of the American Teilhard de Chardin Association. As founder of the History of Religions Program at Fordham University and the Riverdale Center for Religious Research. He has received many awards, including the Lannan Foundation Award for his book, The Dream of the Earth (Sierra Club Books, 1988). His most recent publication is, The Great Work (Bell Tower/Random House, 1999).
