On November 12, 1998, the United States
and eighty-three other nations signed the Kyoto
Protocol—a commitment to work together to
address the dangers of global climate change.
The Clinton administration never pressed Congress
to ratify the treaty. The Bush administration
has rejected it outright, favoring fossil
fuels that promote global warming.
Greenhouse
gas emissions have continued to rise. Unchecked,
global climate change will bring rising sea levels,
widespread disease, agricultural collapse, species
extinction, and incalculable suffering to our
children and grandchildren. All of us must take
responsibility to prevent this calamity or face
the judgment of history.
Religious Witness for the Earth
invites you to the United Nations
for an Interfaith Service of Repentance and
Renewal on November 12, 2003. Participants
will ask the world for forgiveness and will call
the
United
States
to rejoin the community of
nations seeking solutions to global climate change.
Participants will also visit diplomatic missions
of nations most
affected by global climate change and will
rededicate themselves to the faithful stewardship
of the Earth.
