The Forum on Religion and Ecology
is co-sponsoring a conference on World Peace to
be held at Gujarat University Ahmedabad, Gujarat,
India. A significant part of the conference will
focus on issues regarding ecology, environment,
and sustainability.
The conference will include a series
of panels on ecological issues, opportunities
to visit the Centre for Environment Education
(CEE), Indias national environmental education
program based in Ahmedabad on a beautiful 100
acre campus, and opportunities to visit Gir National
Park, home of the siatic lion, the wild ass, the
great Indian bustard, flamingoes, langhur monkeys,
and many other species. The Centre, supported
by Indias Ministry of Environment and Forests,
trains children and adults and promotes sustainable
technology (e.g., smokeless cooking stove).
A call
for papers is being offered for this conference.
Ahmedabad, the primary city
of the western state of Gujarat, is a major industrial
and commercial center of more than four million
people. The city includes many important cultural
sites, including the Sabarmati Ashram, Mahatma
Gandhis home for more than twelve years,
and Gujarat Vidyapeeth, the deemed university
established by Gandhi that still adheres to his
values in its curriculum. Additionally, Ahmedabad
includes one of the worlds largest concentrations
of Jainas.
