Islamic Foundation for Ecology and Environmental Sciences (IFEES)
Abstract

The Islamic Foundation for Ecology and Environmental Sciences (IFEES) is an internationally recognized charity organization articulating Islamic perspectives on the environment that activates those properties inherent in Islam that are capable of remedying the socio-ecological imbalances of our time. IFEES is motivated by Islamic principles such as tawhid (unity), amana (entrustment) of the Earth to khalifa (the stewardship of humankind), and a system of ethics grounded in the Qur’an and sunnah (the guidance) of the Prophet Muhammad. The main objective of this multi-dimensional organization is to set up a center for Islamic research on conservation practice which would serve as the primary training site for practical and theoretical subjects based on the principles of Shariah. The center also serves as a demonstration and promotional site for experimental projects on sustainable land resource management and traditional and non-industrial farming techniques (e.g., organic farming) as well the development of alternative low energy, low cost technology (e.g., water wheels, solar panels, and waste recycling). IFEES currently produces collaborative instructive materials, maintains its own publication, the Qur'an, Creation and Conservation (1999), written by Fazlun Khalid, is compiling a database that will act as an informational exchange unit for environmental affairs, and organizes conferences and seminars throughout the world. IFEES networks globally with NGOs, international organizations, academic bodies, and grassroots organizations, and invites collaborative efforts with organizations and individuals who are dedicated to protecting the Earth for future generations.

IFEES is available on a consultancy basis and maintains a complete list of its current projects on its website. A short synopsis of some of these projects includes:

Indonesia I
A national seminar on the revitalization of the Indonesian environmental movement through the application of Islamic ethics.

Indonesia II
A community-based ecological resource management project.

Nigeria
A project that sensitizes Muslims in the northern region of Nigeria to the ethical dimensions of Islamic environmental practice.

Pakistan
A project focused on the re-greening of the Upper Jehlum Canal (UJC) that is based on Islamic conservation principles.

Yemen
The rehabilitation of traditional water conservation systems in the Republic of Yemen through the application of Islamic conservation principles.

Zanzibar
The establishment of this project provides a foundation for Islamic environmental practice through two main venues: the creation of Shariah based institutions and various publishing efforts (e.g., Guide Book for Ulema and Madrasa Teachers).

History IFEES was founded by Fazlun M. Khalid in the mid-1980s in cooperation with the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) in the United Kingdom (UK). Bearing witness in his work to the interconnection of racism, poverty, debt, and environmental degradation, Khalid recognized the necessity for Muslims (who comprise at least one fifth of the human community) to contribute to contemporary environmental thinking and efforts to confront the global environmental crisis. Khalid's Master's degree from the University of Birmingham focused on Islamic environmentalism. His interest in creating an Islamic eco-community led him, in the 1980s, to gather a small group of people interested in challenging the increasingly alienating influences of urban life. The group aspired to live lives dedicated to environmental protection, energy conservation, and a commitment to simple technology and self-sufficiency. IFEES was created in order to articulate the group’s aspirations and convictions. The proposed IFEES Centre will embody some of the original intentions of the Islamic eco-community.
Mission Statement To work toward the revival of Islamic environmental norms through programs designed to re-educate Muslims in Shariah-based conservation practices.
