The Study of Religion
Religion 1011. The Tree at the Center of the World 9064

This comparative conference course will examine historical and
contemporary traditions of primordial, cosmic, and sacred trees in religion,
folklore, mythology, and ritual, including the ways in which the special
natural characteristics of trees have been interpreted metaphorically and
metaphysically. We will consider primary iconographic and textual evidence
as well as secondary sources. Individual research projects in particular
traditions will be featured. Note: Offered jointly with the Divinity School as

Prerequisite: Previous study of Buddhism.
This survey of Buddhist social teachings examines the evolution of central
concepts (impermanence, selflessness, suffering), ethical styles (discipline,
virtue, altruism, engagement), and themes (peace, justice, gender, ecology) in
Asia and the West. We consider representative figures and movements in the
rise of socially engaged Buddhism since the 19th century.
