Join HUCE for an artist talk with Jeri Eisenberg, whose photo-based work exploring non-traditional and alternative techniques is currently on view at the Center.
Eisenberg is a photo-based artist who works with non-traditional and alternative techniques. She represses traditional photography's emphasis on the representational qualities of the medium and emphasizes the medium's expressive nature instead. Her work steadfastly serves as an affirmation of beauty in the everyday natural world and acts as a reminder of the temporal condition.
Polyptychs from the A Sojourn in Seasons and Warm Waters series are currently on display in the HUCE lounge. All pieces are printed on Japanese Kozo paper and infused with molten encaustic medium (a mixture of beeswax and tree resin). There is an internal luminance resulting from the use of the wax and an appearance of fragility intrinsic to the use of the fluttering, unframed paper. The works hang from acrylic bars with magnets so that they float off the wall and cast shadows, moving gently with air currents in the room.
Eisenberg completed her MFA degree in 2005 at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University and has exhibited widely over the past 25 years, including solo shows in New York (Markel Fine Arts), Houston (Catherine Couturier Gallery), Boston (Lanoue Fine Art), and San Francisco (Cordon/Potts Gallery). She has been the recipient of Individual Artist Grants through the New York Council on the Arts, numerous Special Opportunity Stipends through the New York Foundation for the Arts, and artist residency awards, including the Atlantic Center for the Arts, Vermont Studio Center, and the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Center for Photography at Woodstock; Museu de Arte Moderna do Río de Janeiro; and the Albany Institute of History & Art. Her work has also been featured in private and corporate collections such as Tiffany’s, HSBC, Weill-Cornell Medical Center, and Banana Republic, and it can also be found in the book Encaustic: A Guide to Creating Fine Art with Wax.
