Industry Seminar: Data Science with Steve Sain

Join the Harvard Data Science Initiative and Steve Sain Jupiter Intel for a talk about his career in data science and the estimation of coastal flood risk.

In 2017, the US faced over $300 billion in losses from hurricanes, severe weather, flooding, drought, fire, etc. These national catastrophes are placing an increasing burden on the public and are projected to worsen in the future. Jupiter Intelligence provides facility-level, probabilistic information about how these risks are evolving with climate change to aid companies in operational and long-term asset planning. Jupiter has brought together a team of experts on climate, weather, ocean dynamics, hydrology, fire, and data science along with software engineering to integrate cutting-edge computational models, machine learning, and applied statistics in a cloud-based platform. In this talk, I'll give a brief overview of my background, Jupiter's platform and approach to geophysical modeling, and how data science plays a crucial role. I'll also dive deeper into some of our data science projects, including how we use extreme value methods in a big-data environment.

Steve Sain is a Senior Data Scientist and the Data Science Team Lead for Jupiter Intelligence. Jupiter provides facility-level probabilistic climate risk data for operational and long-term asset planning and has offices in Boulder, CO, San Mateo, CA, and New York City. The data science team is comprised of data scientists and data engineers that work closely with Jupiter’s science and engineering teams, providing expertise in applied statistics, machine learning, and GIS, building data science products, and developing data infrastructure that enables our cloud-based physical modeling at scale. Steve has a PhD in Statistics from Rice University in Houston, TX, and has held academic positions in statistics and applied mathematics. From 2006 to 2014, he was the head of the Geophysical Statistics Project and a scientist in the Institute for Mathematics Applied to Geoscience at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, CO. Since 2014, Steve has worked in industry as a data scientist where he has led data science teams and data science R&D efforts.

Jupiter Intelligence is focused on providing customers information about the risks of various hazards that are impacted by extreme weather and climate change. This is accomplished through an innovative computational pipeline incorporating different geophysical models, machine learning algorithms and tools from applied statistics. This presentation will focus on data science at Jupiter and more specifically the role of data science in estimating the risk of coastal flooding.
