Nathan Mueller is an applied ecologist who studies how agricultural systems influence–and are influenced by–global environmental change.

Nathan received his BA in biology and environmental studies from St. Olaf College in 2007 and his PhD in natural resource science and management from the University of Minnesota in 2013. His dissertation research analyzed environmental tradeoffs to intensifying crop production at the global scale and how climate change may influence capacity for agricultural intensification. Before starting his PhD, Nathan worked at the United States EPA's Mid-Continent Ecology Division.

As an Environmental Fellow, Nathan worked with Peter Huybers of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and Noel Michele Holbrook of the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology to improve statistical models relating climate to crop yield. His work also investigated the interaction between changing agricultural management practices and climate using recently compiled time-series data.
